Chapter Thirteen

Sov

“These clothes are so pretty and so not me.” Mackenzie does another turn in front of the mirror. The silk fabric of the skirt falls across her ass.

I rub a finger across the bottom of my lip and fantasize about how it will feel to have those round cheeks snug up against my groin as I pound her from behind. Behind me, Parker coughs lightly as a reminder not to get too caught up in my lust. There’s a schedule to keep.

“Right. This all looks good.” I gesture for the designer to be paid off. “Parker, get the girl. Zero, is the car ready?”

“Yes. It’s outside.”

Mackenzie swings around from the mirror, looking slightly disoriented. “The girl? Are we going somewhere?”

“We are.” I hold out a long camel-colored light wool jacket for her. It’s still spring and can get chilly. “But you are not the girl.”

Before she can ask who the girl is, Parker appears at the doorway with the seven-year-old. Mackenzie’s brow furrows as she switches back and forth from me to the young person dressed in a pretty frock with her black hair in a bow.

“This is Nour. Nour, this is my friend Mackenzie.”

The extremely well-trained Nour dips in a curtsy. “Nice to meet you, Mackenzie.”

Mackenzie’ s face grows tight, but she smiles and returns the greeting. Parker places a cloak over Nour’s shoulders, and we all move out with Nour at Zero’s heels. The big man fascinates her, probably because her days are filled with girls. Nour is not allowed male companionship. This trip is the exception since I am delivering her, and my retinue is almost entirely male.

“I didn’t realize you had children,” Mackenzie mutters next to me.

“I don’t.” And then I realize she must be referring to Nour. “Nour is the granddaughter of a friend of my mother’s. We have been hosting her for several months while her parents were engaged elsewhere. Unfortunately they have not returned in a timely fashion, so Nour is going to live with her grandmother. She lives in Ashford’s old territory. We would not have brought her if he was still alive.”

Ashford would have taken one look at Nour—or heard of her—and tried to kidnap her. I wonder how many Vieth Orphans have been victims of his.

“Oh, that’s nice and also terrible. I’m not sorry Ashford’s gone. I wonder where he ran off to though. I guess overseas?”

“Yes, something like that.” I’m surprised it’s not well known that Ashford was burned in the basement of Aidon’s, but if Karin Vieth has kept this particular jewel shielded from the harsh realities of life, I will do so as well. That is until Mackenzie is all mine. “Probably Nice. Many bad people go to the beaches of Nice to live.”

“Is that where Mommy and Daddy are?” Nour chirps.

I lay a hand on the head of the little girl. “No, darling. Your grandmother will tell you more.”

Nour makes a face. “No, she won’t.”

“I’m sure all your questions will be answered once we arrive at your grandmama’s.
